You know that gun I was thinking about getting? Well I didn't get it. I got the better model instead :D

Instead of the Springfield XD-9, I got the Springfield XDM-9. Still a 9mm, but nicer grip, more accurate, a little sleeker and I got a decent deal on it: $625. If I could've found the regular XD model (everyone is sold out, apparently, with no dates for getting them back in), it would've been $570. But for $55 more, I got the better model and the dealer had it in stock. The price was actually $679 (kind of steep), but I talked him down. I'm not usually good at that kind of thing, but I guess he knew I was itchy to lay down the cash and he wanted to make the sale. And it's a local dealer I bought from, so no broker fees or hassles.

I'll have it in 10-14 days, after the mountain of paperwork is processed and my background check completed. You should really see the questions on the gun ownership application. You have to answer questions like: Are you an illegal alien? Have you been declared mentally incompetent? And my favorite... Are you a fugitive? LOL



I wanted something more standard size this time since I already have the sub-compact Glock. So I got the 4.5" length. The magazine holds 16 rounds, which will be nice. Baby Glock only holds 10 rounds and my old Bersa .380 holds a measely 7. The Springfield came with 2 magazines, plus I got 3 more in an accessory kit I bought. I'll be able to pop off 80 shots before reloading. Sweet.

Oh, I almost forgot. One sad bit of news. I actually got to hold a Tommy Gun today (I've been wanting one of those ever since the TSCC episode "Self Made Man") and guess what? My arm isn't long enough to hold it properly! I have to have the stock under my arm in order to even reach the hand grip (also that thing is freaking HEAVY). My Tommy Gun dream = *poof*

Actually I asked pretty much that question... "Do they make shorter stocks?" No. Apparently not. So yeah, I'd have to saw it off myself. How ghetto would that be? Buy a $1300 gun and saw it down. :P

The stock is detachable and the barrel is 10.5" long on the military model.

Sadly it's a de-mil, welded shut. It's a WW2-era M1928A1 full-auto military version. But Thompsons are so awesome even a broken one puts a smile on your face.

At my feet in the pic is a de-mil WW2 Bren Mk2. I used to shoot L4 Brens when I was in the Army so it bought back fond memories for me when I saw one again.

I can attest to the fact that happiness is a warm machine gun.

I did get to fire a machine gun one time many years ago. I have no idea what it was but it was ugly and boxy. So judging from that wall of weapons behind you, I guess you're into more than guns? Knives and swords do nothing for me. I just think guns are cool :)

I see that where you are on the East Coast, your gun laws are a little more relaxed than ours in CA. My friend complains that he can only have clips that hold up to 9 rounds for his 9mm. He's anxious to move to his wife's home state of New Mexico, partially because of the gun laws there. LOL!

I don't blame your friend. Maryland's pretty strict compared to most states, but our magazine size limit law thankfully it got tossed. I've got no problem with reasonable gun safety laws, but stuff like magazine size limits are just dumb.

I was going to say that I think the military version of the Thompson is a little shorter, but I see somebody beat me to it. I seem to recall hearing somewhere that the Thompson is infamously heavy, yeah.

I haven't heard anything one way or another about the Springfield, but it is one damn good-looking weapon. A magazine capacity of 16 for 9x19mm isn't bad, either. Huh... and it's just about the same price as my ballistic vest was after tax.

We apparently have barrel length minimums for long guns here in MD. I didn't even know about that, but the dealer who was selling the Tommy Guns said he could only sell the long version (16.5" vs 10.5" I think). I seriously couldn't believe how heavy that sucker was.

I've heard nothing but great things about the Springfield, but I'll post about how I like it after I've gotten it and tried it out. It's quite a comfortable gun to hold, though. Heavier than a Glock, but more ergonomic, so it makes up for it.

Wow, that vest cost you that much? I had no idea. So have you worn it to the corner store just to buy some milk? :P

I seem to recall reading that the guys who carried the Tommy gun in WWII griped about the weight a lot, and that was the short version. Modern SMGs are probably lighter, what with being made of polymers and composites instead of wood. I don't think old Thompson had shooters of your stature in mind when he designed it.

There were some as cheap as $299, but I decided to shell out more for one made with lighter, more flexible materials and go for Level IIIA protection, so it was $559 plus a 9% tax and shipping. Metal trauma plates were another $40, I think, but I don't ever wear them because they do a number on my back and are really obvious, even through a blazer. ("Are you aware your torso has corners?")

Er.... yes. And to the comic book shop. And to get my laundry. At first I just wore it everywhere so that I'd get used to it, but there is the occassional shooting in my neighborhood, and I decided that it doesn't do much good if it's in my closet. My paranoid instincts are well-honed from years of tabletop gaming. ;-) (My friend who also lives around here is jealous. He wishes he'd had some when he was robbed at gunpoint four months ago.)

I may change my mind come summer, tho... wearing it for a length of time like I do at work is a pretty sweaty proposition.
