I think the struggle that Cameron was going through because of her broken chip throughout the season is very real.

Actually, I agree with that. Cameron's chip damage was the thing I believe made her more human in a lot of ways. But I'm also contemplating that she had 3 missions programmed inside her: 1. kill John, 2. protect John, 3. the "will you join us" mission. And it would seem that #3 took priority over protecting John.

Back to the kill switch, though, I believe that was intended to create trust. And it worked. When John had his face-off with Jesse, he told her he wouldn't have destroyed Cameron even if she had killed Riley. And later when he was talking to Derek, he took the kill switch off and put it in his pocket — he was never going to use it.

Cameron's a tricky one, though. I've done a lot of writing about her, but I never seem to finish and post it because I change my mind about her motive a lot. Assuming the show gets renewed, I think I'll get back to that and do a big Cameron post at some point. She's such a great character.
