At the risk of making everyone go "ewwwww", think about this poor kid's life a moment. Barring Terminator 3 from existence from just a moment (basically assuming he never kissed Kate Brewster the day before Terminator 2)... From a young age he was dragged around militant camp after militant camp after militant camp with his mom, constantly boning any man she could to get more information on how to make John a killing machine (the irony there), for the first years of his life, the only woman he probably ever saw, spoke to, or worse, walked in on naked was probably his mom.

Yes, granted, he was given to adoption agencies for a year or so, but that's not enough to make up for a lifetime of protection and confusing closeness with mummy dearest.

Combine that with the constant tension between them, maybe he *does* want to fuck his mother, subconsciously. Maybe his mind doesn't have any other recourse - she is Protector, Alpha and Omega, teacher, mother, ... and lover. He wouldn't think that consciously, but SUBconciously? I'd say it's almost inevitable.

One thing about this series - in Terminator 2 as well as TSCC - she's not training him to be a Great Military Leader, she's training him to be a soldier. She wants him to bark and follow her orders, she wants him to fire weapons, she wants him to make homemade bombs, but all that time, she's isolating him, 'protecting' him from humanity. Leaders are supposed to be charismatic, know how to talk to people, know how to MOTIVATE people. It's not just as simple as barking orders and making people obey you, you have to want people to die for you. As naturally charismatic as John is, I really don't comprehend how this supposedly-protected life she's making him lead is doing anything but making him a deviant robot-lover with oedipal issues.

To protect something with passion, and inspire others to passion, you must believe in it and be a part of it, and he's not a part of humanity, he's separate. And as Cameron says, it's lonely being John Connor. His only connection was Mom until Cameron came, and people wonder why he's latching on to her and clinging? He wants someone to love, to care about, and the life Sarah has offered him does not allow it, as Riley *proved*.

So yeah, it's not surprising to me that he wants wrong things with mummy, and I wish she'd lighten up on him and let him be a leader.
